I love my MacBook Pro and since having it for a couple of years am a bit of a convert to all things Apple. I love that they look so nice and work so well. These things are not at odds! I know that the niceness of the looks doesn't make it work any better, but why not have something that does both!

Anyway, Stephen Fry tweeted this <a _blank"="" href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D1R-jKKp3NA%20target=">YouTube video of Steve Jobs delivering the commencement address for Stanford University from 2005.

I found the speech very inspiring even though I don't agree with him on everything. For instance one of his messages is to pursue your dreams, and if you are not loving what you are doing then change it. Now there is some truth in this, but I think there must be some boundaries. If I followed all my desires, without holding them in check then I'm not sure it would make me a very likeable person! As a Christian, holding them in check means measuring them up to the demands of Jesus and the bible.

I found his honesty very engaging, and his creative energy inspiring. Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-51195699930689356022011-09-10T09:00:00.000+01:002011-09-10T09:00:04.660+01:00Hand-animated v computer-drawn

An interesting thought is why are hand-drawn images often more engaging than computer-drawn?

This cannot always be the case, otherwise we wouldn't be wowed by films such as Pixar's Toy Story 3 and Up, and how realistic they look. Although these still maintain a cartoon quality, perhaps unlike Avatar with which I didn't really engage.

But there is a something in it, that the rougher something is drawn then it often appears more engaging, more human. This article got me thinking. I suppose I wonder how it applies to images I may use in my work at school, and in any graphics I use in sermons and talks.

I wish I could draw!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-65165983815100640252011-09-09T14:23:00.000+01:002011-09-09T14:43:41.892+01:00Carbon Footprint
I've been thinking about about looking after the environment, and I wonder how my consumption of the earth's resources matches that of parents when they were my age. I guess we are more than them (on account of having more gadgets) but as we try to live simply, I wonder if it is much more?

Google's published carbon footprint caught my eye in this respect. They have taken drastic steps to minimise their impact, which seems to me to be a laudable thing to do.They are employing three simple strategies to do this: saving energy, using green energy and offsetting the carbon they use. I would like to implement these strategies in my life too.

We try to minimise the amount of energy we use by turning things off, using energy efficient lightbulbs, only running one car and cycling where we can. I'm sure there is more we can do, especially with the latter.

We were on a green tariff, but my energy company stopped that ages ago and we've not switched to another yet. To this end, I came across Energy Share and would like to use their services, I just need to get it sorted out.

I haven't offset our energy yet, because I'm not convinced of the value of it, and I'm not sure of the reputability of the companies offering that service.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-87838861130649059062010-06-01T23:47:00.001+01:002011-09-09T14:43:02.922+01:00Myers BriggsI have just taken the Myers Briggs personality test and I came out as ENFP. In it he talks rapidly about success and failure and different approaches to it. What interested me was how he had to draw on theistic themes to drive home his points, namely:
1) We shouldn't judge other people too harshly. (8 min 27 sec)
De Botton quotes Augustine's The City of God, talking about folly of judging people and how we should leave that up to God.
2) We have lost any sense of transcendence. (11 min 23 sec)
De Botton says "The other thing about modern society and why it causes us anxiety, is that we have nothing at its centre that is non-human." He goes on to say that we need something beyond ourselves to worship.

De Botton is a secularist (he says so in his talk) but it is astonishing how theistic his secular philosophising is. Now clearly this is a million miles away from being even a theist, or more to the point, a Christian - but I just thought it was worthy of note. Along the way he mentions Tragic art, snobbery and a whole host of other stuff.

De Botton seems like and interesting guy and has his own personal website. He is an author of numerous books on an eclectic mix of topics (reaching polymathic proportions). One of his projects is The School of Life, which "...is a new social enterprise offering good ideas for everyday living." It is refreshing to find people willing to engage in thinking deeply about life.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-30226576383458394552009-07-07T23:20:00.003+01:002009-07-07T23:23:17.107+01:00MathemagicHere's another one of those TED talks. There were two lectures on applications of maths. These were basically trying to get us to encourage our students to study maths (at Birmingham) by showing us the cutting edge of maths. All very interesting (there was some fascinating stuff) but there was nothing I could really use in the classroom.

The best bit of the day was experimenting with a free piece of software called Geogebra

GeoGebra via kwout

This session was a basic introduction to this software which from a mathematical point of view is AMAZING. I will probably blog more about this in the future but <a href="http://maths.shore.org.uk/" target="_"blank"">here are some of the sketches I have made. I have used Geogebra quite a lot so found this session a bit basic - but it was great to pick up a few new tips.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-14916524050758858462009-06-25T22:40:00.006+01:002009-06-27T11:18:57.889+01:00EMA 2009Today I went to my first EMA. It was quite good. The four talks were:

1) Psalm 86 - David Jackman
I've not really enjoyed David Jackman's preaching (I'm sure this says more about me than him) - on the few times I've heard him, it has been too easy for me to tune out because it is just so dull and not punchy. So I was pleasantly surprised by this session - it skipped along at quite a place (unfortunately all intoned in a very measured way). According to David Jackman, the pivoting verse of the Psalm is v11 "...give me an undivided heart, that I may fear your name." He talked about how suffering will throw into sharp relief the divided nature of our hearts. I found this talk helpful and heart warming.

2) Prayer and Mission - Don Carson
This was a Don Carson special. I really enjoyed it: 5 points contrasting different types of praying:

Sustained prayer verses brief prayer

Desperate prayer verses steady prayer

Private prayer verses public prayer

Corporate covenant renewal prayer verses special request prayer

Unacceptable prayer verses acceptable prayer

He illustrated each type of prayer from different bits of the bible. It was stretching and challenging. I love to hear stuff on prayer because I'm so bad at it. He finished with "Much praying is not done because we don't plan to pray" which I think he writes about in A Call To Spiritual Reformation.

3) Don Carson interview by Richard Cunningham
At first I thought this may be a rehash of other interviews about Carson's parents, but in fact it ranged much wider. It was fascinating stuff. They discussed Carson's parents, Carson's ministry and various controversies among other things. I really enjoyed it.

4) Promoting the Gospel in the Local Church - John Dickson
Dickson talked about different ways of getting the gospel out: evangelists, evangelistic worship and everyone giving an answer. It is always good to be motivated to get the gospel out (and I really need a kick up the backside) but left me a bit unmoved.

Reflections on EMA?
Well, culturally it seems quite different to me... London, Anglican, plummey accents, very measured - though Carson and Dickson are obviously not from that set. It was fun going, but if Carson hadn't been there, it would have been really very dull. It was great bumping into some people from my past: Simon Dyke and Matt Fuller.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-3109982494490988592009-06-24T11:59:00.006+01:002009-06-24T23:45:25.009+01:00New Blog TemplateHere's my new blog template based on the blogger template Denim. And to be honest, in their cities, I thought if I saw just one more incredible skyscaper or fine piece of public art, I'd scream!
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-13074876920198958232006-02-08T21:32:00.001+00:002009-06-23T22:08:03.871+01:00
Lacock Christmas Holiday Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-47852478286585231022005-12-09T19:14:00.000+00:002009-06-13T23:03:36.375+01:00Mistletoe and WineJust a quick blog this Christmas for any one who reads it... its better than getting one of those Christams letters stuck in your card (apologies to anyone who does that, of course I love reading yours!)

Sue and I are okay. It's been an eventful year, here are some of those events, in no particular order:

Our church (Knighton) started a new church (Avenue Community Church) and Sue and I are really enjoying being part of it. It's great to start something new and especially to be part of a smaller congregation. And we've had to trust God (which is no bad thing).

In May I had a bad accident on my bike, breaking my collar bone and hip. I was off work for half a term, and couldn't walk until the end of the summer. Even now my sciatic nerve aches (it's the cold weather you know).

I sold my beloved camper van, and was sorry to see it go... maybe I'll buy another one?

Sue is doing lots of music and singing, mainly with a jazz combo (come to the Cow and Plough on Wednesday lunch times and you'll see) and the Cecilian Singers chamber choir. Both sound amazing.

Our jobs are good, both still enjoying teaching at St John's and Beauchamp College.

Our families are well.

Thanks for reading this. Have a great Christmas. And remember him who gave us this jolly good celebration in the first place!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-23219001029699113402005-09-16T12:25:00.003+01:002009-06-24T11:53:35.420+01:00Sue and meThis is Sue and me in the summer in Northumberland.
Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-14929891951392995822005-07-16T22:04:00.000+01:002009-06-24T11:55:13.073+01:00The Bus Here's some cool pictures of my van, before I sell it :-(Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-14736709760975372762005-07-16T17:12:00.000+01:002009-06-13T23:03:36.386+01:00Ground Control to Major Tom
Thought I'd try this out again. It's ages since I last posted.
I've had a strange few weeks. At the end of June I came of my bicycle and broke my Clavicle and Acetabulum, that is my collar bone (left side) and the socket in my pelvis (right side). Ouch! I've had 6 weeks bed rest (when I was behaving myself anyway). This is a picture of me in my wheelchair and sling holding my commode.
Anyway it's been a good chance to think and pray.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-48820586176290943072004-05-25T22:32:00.000+01:002009-06-24T11:55:13.073+01:00TransportingBeen thinking about buying a second car for some time. But why buy a boring car when you can have a VW Transporter. Its a 1972 Type II beauty.Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-91144807171150233492004-03-16T22:53:00.001+00:002009-07-07T23:26:46.184+01:00Fish and ChipsWell what an evening its been, one of a couple of new experiences:

1) Led my first session of Christianity Explored, a resource which does what it says on the tin... explores Christianity.

2) Did my first talk in a Fish and Chip shop.

Let me explain. I went to Loughborough University to take one of their Christianity Explored sessions. The FES (Fellowship of Evangelical Students) have about 7 friends who are interested in considering the claims of Christ. I did talk number 3 about "Why did Jesus die?" and it seemed to go okay. The venue they use is a room in a chip shop. Nice surroundings and good "neutral" territory. What a terrific bunch of students and there were some good discussions going on.

...and the fish and chips were very nice to!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-64397066747431989622004-03-13T19:03:00.001+00:002009-06-15T16:15:20.341+01:00Lost in DIY (Part 1)Did something new today, started "boxing in" the pipe going from the extractor fan in our kitchen to the outside wall. Bought the stuff from Homebase and its now nearly finished. The box is made and one of the batons is on the wall, and its just ripe for finishing next Saturday. Good job!

Our kitchen is now almost finished... hallelujah! We cannot wait to get it all done, and start inviting people round again. Our main motivation has been to better offer hospitality, not just have a nice house. We are almost there, when we can hopefully express our commitment to Christ in this way.

After the kitchen, there's the bathroom to finish and then just three rooms to decorate. Phew!Unknownnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2811364472697802384.post-39150211690898225352004-03-11T21:19:00.003+00:002010-09-21T19:16:00.372+01:00To infinity and beyond!Hello. Welcome to my first blog.

Today has been an okay day, but very busy. Most of my students behaved themselves... even Wayne.* I've not achieved half of the things I wanted to tonight, because I've been playing on this blog site and setting up my web page. I'd better go... my socks need pairing.

Come back again soon, there might (doubtfully) be something interesting on it. I hope to keep a sort of online record of stuff, thoughts etc. about life in general what I'm doing and about being a follower of Jesus Christ

See you!
